Changes and Pivots: Moving from Story into Action
(Video version here. Scroll down for written version)
(Written version)
It’s time to move from storytelling to action. The bar of walking the talk is a pretty high one as I acknowledged last week. But there is always the first step.
From your exploration of what your story is and who you want to be for yourself, the answers are in the question. Your stories and who you want to become get you closer to your ideal self, the version of you you want to walk towards. This version consistently changes as time goes by, and you continue updating your beliefs, your thoughts, and your behavior.
But ultimately, it is a constant experiment where by taking small steps towards that version, we consistently learn about what works for us, what does not, and what resonates more with ourselves at each step.
It may sound daunting, but I promise you it can be manageable, and it can start as small as you want. It’s all in how we break it down. I will give you my example.
I want to be a person who values her time above all else and is really intentional about how she spends it.
How does that translate?
For example, I want to be a person who does not spend her last hour (or hours?) or the day scrolling through Tik Tok, but I am not (for now!). So the question becomes: “What would a person who does not scroll through Tik Tok until late at night behave?”
Well, perhaps that is a person who sets a filter on her phone so she cannot access Tik Tok after a certain hour in the day. Or that is a person who leaves her phone outside her bedroom once it is time to go to sleep.
By breaking it down and committing to the small steps, we are already telling ourselves that we have our backs in becoming that version of ourselves. Progress is already encouraging.
If awareness and intentionality were key for the storytelling of who you are, Discipline is the other side of this story to put it into action. But here is the thing: we are human, so it will always look and feel imperfect. It is less about consistency and more about perseverance. Because once we start experimenting, we gather plenty of information along the way. And that is what we will explore next month, in what I call “From Here to Next”.
