What Unpacking Our Goals Taught Us So Far...
Thank you to those who joined our Community Coffee Hour this week with their various drinks while the snow kept coming outside. We had a great discussion on career goals, focusing on understanding what is behind the ones that we keep top of mind these days. Here are a few takeaways from it:
Goals are multidimensional
We often think about career goals as one, isolated target. But even if there is only one goal in our minds, it does not exist in a vacuum. It exists in tandem and tension with others.
Zoom out and dig in
Because these goals are intertwined with other aspects of our lives, it is crucial that we zoom out to see the bigger picture. How does pursuing this goal impact each aspect of my life? How do I want my life to look like as I accomplish this goal? During our discussion, we talked about the "buckets", the different areas of our lives that we think about today associated to this goal (or goals).
Goals can feel daunting, knowing why helps
We don't always have a clear reason for why we want a specific goal, and identifying the answer can be scary. Goals may feel too big, leaving us wondering where to start. That is when getting tactical and breaking goals down help. At a deeper level, we might not know what is driving us in that direction (or away from it). That requires us to confront what we know (and what we don't know) about ourselves. Developing self-awareness around the why can pay off much more than building a work plan then.
We left off with one key question, that we will explore in our next Community Coffee Hour: When you think about the goal(s) you have top of mind today, how do you want to feel?
See you at our next Community Coffee Hour!
